It replaces the previous Machinery Directive 2006\/42\/EC and is applicable from 20 January 2027.<\/p><p>For many manufacturers, this is more than just a formal transition. After all, modern machinery today is increasingly electrified, software-based and networked. As a result, issues such as functional safety, software integrity, cyber aspects, system integration and the traceability of modifications are moving even further into focus.<\/p><p>Particularly for manufacturers of electrically powered machinery, this means that these exact regulations must be incorporated into the development of solutions right from the start, rather than only at the end.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-fa27aa4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"fa27aa4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Why the new Machinery Regulation is relevant<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2af9c40f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"2af9c40f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The new regulation explicitly takes account of the technical developments of recent years. The focus includes machinery and systems that are increasingly characterised by digitalisation, connectivity, software-based functions, autonomy and AI-related applications.<\/p><p>This also shifts the perspective in development: it is not only mechanical safety that is relevant, but the interaction between electronics, software, control systems, communication and safety functions.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-581bf1c elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"581bf1c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Important requirements that manufacturers should keep in mind<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0481fc4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0481fc4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The Machinery Regulation addresses requirements regarding, among other things:<\/p><ul><li>the safety and reliability of safety-related control systems<\/li><li>the protection of safety-critical software and data against accidental or intentional falsification or manipulation<\/li><li>software-based security features as well as digital and networked technologies<\/li><li>the digital provision of operating instructions and certain technical information<\/li><li>the traceability of interventions and modifications to safety-critical software and configurations<\/li><\/ul><p>These points show: regulatory requirements for machinery are becoming more specific where electronics and software now perform central functions.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1f261be elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"1f261be\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What this means for electrically driven machinery<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-48afaa0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"48afaa0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Especially with electrically driven machines \u2013 such as in industrial applications or mobile working machines \u2013 it is no longer sufficient to focus exclusively on performance, efficiency or installation space.<\/p><p>What is much more crucial is that electric drive systems:<\/p><ul><li>work safely and reliably,<\/li><li>can be integrated into safety-related machine functions,<\/li><li>are protected against unwanted or unauthorised changes,<\/li><li>collaborate cleanly with higher-level control and communication structures,<\/li><li>and can be seamlessly integrated into the overall machine concept in a comprehensible manner.<\/li><\/ul><p>In other words: <strong>Performance alone is not enough.<\/strong><br \/>Modern electric drive technology must also function convincingly under the requirements of safety, security and conformity.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-96c8820 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"96c8820\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Why these topics belong early in development<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8fe5000 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8fe5000\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>In practice, it continually becomes apparent that if regulatory requirements are considered only late in the day, the effort involved increases significantly. Subsequent adjustments to architecture, software, interfaces or documentation then become expensive, time-critical and complex.<\/p><p>However, anyone who considers requirements for security, software, communication and verification early on creates better conditions for:<\/p><ul><li>consistent system architectures<\/li><li>robust technical documentation<\/li><li>clearly defined responsibilities and interfaces<\/li><li>more efficient validation and compliance processes<\/li><li>lower development risks later in the project lifecycle<\/li><\/ul><p>Therefore, it is clear to us: regulation should not be a check at the end of development. It should be part of development.<\/p><p>This is precisely where we at <strong>INRO Electrical Engineering<\/strong> a.<\/p><p>We develop and manufacture motor controllers for demanding electrical applications.
