Cyber Security
What is cyber security?
Cyber security refers to the protection of computer systems, networks and data against digital attacks, misuse, theft and unauthorised access.
In terms of electrical engineering, the main focus is on protecting networked electrical systems from digital attacks.
Since 2024, the EU has had an EU directive, NIS2 (Network and Information Security 2), which sets strict requirements for the cyber security of important services in areas such as energy and transport.
The CRA (Cyber Resilience Act) also applies in the EU and is an EU regulation that has been in force since December 2024 and affects all products with digital elements. The CRA is intended to ensure the cyber security of products throughout the entire product life cycle.
Where is cyber security relevant?
Cyber security is relevant wherever electrical systems are networked, for example via Ethernet, Modbus, CAN. Electrical systems can be drive technology such as motor controllers, automation technology such as self-driving logistics systems or building technology such as intelligent lighting. As soon as a system is networked, it is potentially vulnerable and must be protected. The devices are also networked in the so-called „IoT - Internet of Things“.
