MODBUS

What is MODBUS?

The MODBUS protocol is a communication protocol based on a so-called client/server architecture. MODBUS enables standardised and standardised data exchange between different devices. This means that a client (e.g. a PC) can be connected to several servers (e.g. a measuring system). The client initiates communication with the servers, which then respond to the requests.

What is MODBUS used for?

MODBUS is frequently used in automation projects:

  • Building automation
    • Control and monitoring of air conditioning units, ventilation systems, heating systems and meters
  • Industrial automation
    • Control of communication between controllers, measuring devices and motors, for example
  • HEMS (energy management systems)
    • Control of various actuators in an intelligent management system

Synonyms:

Data transfer protocol (general umbrella term)
Fieldbus protocol (general umbrella term)
