SMT - Surface Mount Technology

What is SMT?

SMT stands for Surface Mount Technology and is a process in electronics production in which electronic components are mounted on the surface of a printed circuit board. The components are placed on the solder pads of a circuit board by an automatic placement machine and then soldered in a reflow oven.

Where is SMT used?

SMT is used as a process in the electronics production of all modern electronic products. The technology is what makes devices such as computers or industrial electronics such as motor controllers possible in the first place.

Another technique is THT (Through Hole Technology), where the components are inserted through the PCBs instead of being soldered to the surface.
