EN 18031
What is EN 18031?
EN 18031 is a European series of standards for the cybersecurity of internet-enabled radio equipment. It helps manufacturers demonstrate compliance with the requirements of the Radio Equipment Directive 2014/53/EU (RED) for connected radio products.
What is the purpose of EN 18031?
The goal of EN 18031 is to provide uniform requirements and testing procedures for cybersecurity. This is intended to ensure that radio equipment does not interfere with networks, protects data and privacy, and – if necessary – supports measures against fraud.
What does this mean for the field of electrically driven vehicles and machines?
For companies in the field of electrically driven vehicles and machines, EN 18031 is relevant when products use wireless technologies such as WLAN, Bluetooth or mobile telephony. This applies, for example, to connected machines, charging infrastructure or smart vehicle components.
Â
In practice, manufacturers must assess whether their products meet the RED requirements, conduct a cybersecurity risk assessment, prepare technical documentation, and prepare the conformity assessment for CE marking. EN 18031 is therefore important for market access in the EU. The RED cybersecurity requirements apply from August 1, 2025. Starting December 11, 2027, the CRA must be taken into account as a supplement or priority for products with digital elements; the interaction with RED/EN 18031 must be assessed on a product-specific basis.
