What is the Cyber Resilience Act?
The Cyber Resilience Act, or CRA for short, is an EU regulation for the cybersecurity of products with digital elements. These include hardware and software products that can be connected directly or indirectly to a device or network.
What is the CRA’s goal?
The CRA requires manufacturers to consider cybersecurity in planning, development, production, and maintenance. The focus is on mandatory security requirements, vulnerability management, regular security updates, and documentation and proofing obligations.
For particularly critical products, an external conformity assessment may be required before they can be sold in the EU. After successful conformity assessment, the product may or must be labeled with the CE marking within the framework of market access, provided that all relevant requirements are met.
What does this mean for the field of electrically driven vehicles and machines?
For manufacturers and operators of electrically powered vehicles, machines and networked systems, the CRA is particularly relevant because many modern products contain digital and networked functions. These include, for example, industrial controls, networked machines, apps, firewalls, smart meters or networked and software-based components.

For customers, this means that products must be developed more securely from the outset, known vulnerabilities must be addressed in a structured manner, and security updates become an integral part of the product lifecycle. This increases product security, strengthens confidence in digital solutions, and helps meet future market requirements in the EU.
