ISO 26262

What is ISO 26262?

ISO 26262 is the international standard for the functional safety of electrical and electronic systems in motor vehicles. It governs the entire product lifecycle – from the concept phase through development and production to decommissioning.

What is the goal of ISO 26262?

The goal of ISO 26262 is to minimize malfunctions and risks in motor vehicles. The standard describes requirements for safe electronic vehicle functions, the development of safer hardware and software, and the prevention of dangerous malfunctions.

An important component is the Hazard Analysis and Risk Assessment (HARA). In this process, every planned vehicle function is examined for potential hazards to drivers and other road users. This results in the Automotive Safety Integrity Level (ASIL). The levels range from ASIL A to ASIL D, with ASIL D representing the highest safety requirements.

What does this mean for the field of electrically driven vehicles and machines?

For companies in the field of electrically driven vehicles and machines, ISO 26262 is only partially relevant. Although it is specifically oriented towards motor vehicles, some methods and processes can be applied to mobile machines and forklifts as well.

These include, for example, structured security processes, risk analyses and the systematic development of secure hardware and software.
