IP protection classes
What is the IP protection class?
The IP protection class (Ingress Protection) allows systems to be classified according to the degree of protection of electronic devices against the ingress of solids or liquids. The first digit indicates protection against solids and the second digit protection against liquids. Protection against foreign bodies is categorised up to the number 6 and protection against liquids is categorised up to the number 9. Each number is assigned to a clearly defined degree of protection.
The combination of the digits gives the housings of electronic devices a clear area of application. Devices that are used outdoors, for example in construction machinery, require a higher degree of protection than electronic devices that are only used indoors.
If the first digit is a zero, there is no protection against contact or foreign bodies. If the first digit is a 6, the electronic device is dustproof. If the second digit of the IP protection class is a 9, the electronic device is protected against high-pressure cleaning with water.
Where are IP protection classes or IP protection types required?
IP protection classes are used wherever electrical or electronic devices need to be protected against the ingress of solid foreign bodies (e.g. dust) and water. Typical areas of application are
- Industry and mechanical engineering: Protection of control systems, motors, sensors and switch cabinets in dusty or damp production environments
- Building and electrical engineering: Outdoor lights, sockets, distribution boxes and security technology
- Automotive and transport technology: Electronic components in vehicles, charging infrastructure, signalling and sensor technology
- Energy and environmental technology: Solar systems, wind turbines, measuring and control devices in outdoor areas
- Medical and laboratory technology: Devices that must be protected against splash water or cleaning fluids
- Consumer electronics: Smartphones, smartwatches, cameras and outdoor devices
- Marine, agricultural and outdoor applications: Devices with high exposure to water, dust or weather influences
